The study found that about 35% of people were influenced by a manga to get into their hobby. By contrast, anime and movies came in at around 15% each, novels at 14.5%, games at 11.5%, and TV dramas at 8.4%.
There was some gender difference as well: anime was second place for men and overall, but among just women, novels ranked second with 18.6% (among men, anime was 19.7%).
Age varied as well; people over the age of 30 were more likely to be influenced by a movie, whereas the 20-year-olds and 40-year-olds stuck with manga. I wonder if that's due to generational culture, or if it's more like 30-year-olds go through a phase where they're too busy with work to read manga?
The survey also found some of the titles that most influenced Japan's hobbyists: Hikaru no Go, Nodame Cantabile, Captain Tsubasa, and Slam Dunk for manga. Anime favored Star of the Giants (baseball) and Aim for the Ace! (tennis). Respondents were inspired to try sports, study languages or history, and other activities...but only about 12% said they were still active in the hobby at the time of the survey, which ran from May 18th to 21st and featured 538 men and women.
Has a manga or anime ever gotten you to try a hobby-- or made you want to?
