Despite the fact that their sexual preferences are listed in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as potentially problematic, people who play with whips and chains in the bedroom may actually be more psychologically healthy than those who don't.
A new study finds that practitioners of bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism, or BDSM, score better on a variety of personality and psychological measures than "vanilla" people who don't engage in unusual sex acts. BDSM is a sexual practice that revolves around those four fetishes.
BDSM is listed in the DSM-5, the newest edition of the definitive psychiatrist's manual, as a paraphilia, or unusual sexual fixation — a label that has caused controversy between kinky communities and psychiatrists, who themselves are mixed on whether sexual predilections belong in the catalog of mental disorders. As written, the DSM-5 does not label BDSM a disorder unless it causes harm to the practitioner or to others. [Hot Stuff? 10 Unusual Sexual Fixations]
1.Feelings of Power Trigger a Lack of Compassion A study in an issue of Psychological Science set out to test this idea. The subjects were then paired up, and one was told to relay an emotionally scarring event that had happened to him. The listener was hooked up to an ECG machine, and all of his stress responses were measured.
The powerless people reacted the way you'd expect people would react when told a heart-wrenching tale. The powerful, on the other hand, felt nothing. Or at least, their responses couldn't be measured, whether they naturally felt no empathy or were just better at regulating their emotions.
The researchers had all of the subjects fill out a survey at the end and inquired about whether they'd like to stay in touch with the other experiment subjects after the experiment was over, to see if maybe they'd made any friends during this ordeal. The powerless subjects were into it. The powerful were not. They wanted nothing more to do with the stranger they'd just traded personal stories with.
2. Power Gives You a False Belief in Your Abilities Another study found that people with power see the world more positively and are therefore more likely to take risks based on the pure blind faith that things always work out for them because they're awesome.
3. Experiments Show Power and Hypocrisy Are Linked in the Brain It explains why so many vehemently anti-gay politicians and religious leaders are creepy sexual deviants. A Dutch researcher mixed things up this time, using five different experiments to try to instill a sense of power in people using different methods, presumably to make sure it wasn't anything particular to a specific kind of role-playing that got the results.
No matter how the researcher went about instilling the feelings of power, the results were the same: Within minutes, a feeling of power flips a switch in the brain that says, "The rules now do not apply to me. BRING ME A WHORE."
But even stranger, the people induced to feel powerless went the opposite way -- they actually were more self-critical than they'd normally be. Think about what that says about society: The people who are already powerless, as a result feel like they're less worthy to be in power and thus stay powerless.
4.Feeling Powerful Makes It Easier to Lie Researchers at Columbia Business School used a similar setup to the "E" experiment above, where they did a role-play that divided subjects into leaders and subordinates. Leaders were even given a fancy, large office; the underlings got a small, windowless room. All of them were then tempted to lie (they found a $100 bill and were put in a situation where they'd have to lie about it to the people running the experiment if they wanted to keep it).
5.Power and Self-Absorption Go Hand in Hand First, researchers found that in leaderless situations, those with high opinions of themselves will take charge, for better or for worse.

Tera Patrick shares her story about entertaining the troops.
Tera Patrick is one of the biggest names in the adult industry – but apparently she’s also working on becoming one of the biggest names in the defense industry too.
“I’ve done a couple of military tours, I’m extremely honored they even asked me,” Patrick recently told Pop Tarts while promoting her new autobiography “Sinner Takes All.” “I think that our troops are amazing; anyone that is willing to go out and risk their life for our country is so selfless. I have so many fans that are in the military that tell me they take my picture to Iraq and that helps them through.”
Speaking of Patrick’s fan base, one hip-hop mogul in particular even got a little star struck while in the presence of the porn princess.
“I met Kanye West at New York Fashion Week last year, he actually approached someone I was with and asked if he could get his picture with me and said I was so beautiful,” the 33-year-old added. “Everyone is a fan of someone. I’m not nervous to meet anybody, but I’m a big fan of J.K Simmons. When I met him I was actually shaking, I couldn’t think of anything to say.”
However Patrick certainly does have a lot to say about her career, and her recently released biography captures the many trials and tribulations of life in the adult arena – including dramatic details of her nervous breakdown.
“When people go through trauma they deal with it in different ways, I had a nervous breakdown,” Patrick said. “Today in my life I am very centered and very happy, writing the book was extremely cathartic. It has been a long journey but I’m in a very good place and I’m a very lucky woman.”
So what is the biggest misconception people tend to have of the “Best of the Breasts” and “Where the Boys Aren’t 18” starlet?
“People think, 'She must be stuck-up,'" Patrick said. "I’ve heard all the rumors about myself [such as] I demand Fiji water everywhere I go – ha, which I do. But I think that biggest misconception about girls in the industry is that we’re forced to do it against our will and that’s not true. I chose empowerment over exploitation and I chose to get into this business. I did it all on my own terms, I have my own company. I treat the business like business and because of that I have become very successful.”
Patrick hit headlines in 2007 when her production company Teravision filed a lawsuit against fellow X-rated mega-star Jenna Jameson and Playboy Enterprises (the owners of Club Jenna), alleging that Playboy failed to account for and pay royalties on revenue earned from its management of Patrick’s Web site Clubtera.com.
But according to Ms Patrick, the bickering is over and she and Jameson are totally back on good terms.
“It’s funny because you grow up, we both are in different but good places in our lives,” she said. “We’ve both contributed substantially to the industry, she’s now a mother and I’m crossing over into mainstream (acting). I have nothing but nice words to say.”

One of the most popular American statues of the 19th century, Hiram Powers' The Greek Slave (1844), portrays a Greek girl captured by the Turks and put up for sale in a Middle Eastern slave market. The sculptor said of his work: "As there should be a moral in every work of art, I have given to the expression of the Greek slave what trust there could still be in a Divine Providence for a future state of existence, with utter despair for the present, mingled somewhat of scorn for all around her . . . It is not her person but her spirit that stands exposed." Powers made six versions of the statue, differing somewhat in the shape of the slave's chains and other details. Miniature copies of the statue were immensely popular for the rest of the century, "so undressed, yet so refined, in sugar-white alabaster, exposed under little glass covers in such American homes as could bring themselves to think such things right," as Henry James sarcastically put it. more
